For a woman, having a regular period means our hormones are working. An irregular period is the first sign of hormone imbalance. Unfortunately many women view periods as an inconvenience. We are so disconnected from our bodies that we view menstruation through a negative lens.

Growing up, having a period was embarrassing. I remember in health class the way they taught us was separating the boys away from us, hiding the tampons and pads, making sure the boys were gone, then whispering and teaching us how to use them. My takeaway from that moment was that it was a shameful thing that should be hidden. Of course I got my period the first day I wore my new pair of white jeans…typical. I was SO scared. So confused. Embarrassed. That is not how it should be.

In college, I would purposely use herbs or take birth control pills so that I could skip my period for when it wasn’t convenient to me. Instead of building my life around listening to my body and syncing my body to my cycle, I tried to engineer my body to fit my environment.

This, along with my lifestyle, environment and hormonal birth control caused me to lose my period for two years. Two years I didn’t get my period, and honestly when it first happened I was happy. I didn’t see a problem with it.

However, in those two years, I was the sickest I had ever been. I had horrible gut issues and hormone imbalance.

As I fell in love with holistic health, I realized how grateful I should be to have a period. That it was a sign of health and fertility. I had taken it for granted.

I began to embrace my femininity and change my lifestyle so that my hormones would be balanced and I would heal. And I did, after two years I got my period back.

Every single body is different. We all respond to things differently. But I want to share with you how I changed my lifestyle to become more in tune with my body and get my period back.

Before I get into it, I think the biggest difference we can make is how we educate the future generation of women. Unfortunately, women do not get a proper education about their bodies. I didn’t learn till my 20s how to properly take care of my body. I am still learning. I didn’t know about cycle syncing and the 4 phases of my menstrual cycle. I didn’t know that I could be the best version of myself by listening to my body and honoring those phases. This should be taught!

So many young women are dealing with hormonal imbalance, PCOS, hormone issues because they do not know how to properly understand and take care of their bodies. They are not given education and options! It starts with us. Openly communicating.

Let’s teach young women to change their mindset to cherishing, embracing, and honoring their cycle. It is not something to be ashamed of. I know it sounds woo woo, but seriously, I would’ve been so grateful to have that education and acceptance when I was younger. I know all my friends would too. It would’ve made a world of a difference.

But anyways, let’s get intooooo it.

10 Steps on How I got my Period Back

1. Going Back to the Basics

There are a million and one “hormone-balancing” supplements out there. But I promise you, not one of those is single-handedly going to balance hormones. If you don’t go back to the basics of health first, then any supplement or “extra” non necessary thing you do on top of that won’t matter. These things may optimize your health and make you feel good, but not if you don’t lay down that foundation first.

What truly matters is not all the biohacking madness. What really matters is: sunlight, nature, grounding, quality sleep, intentional breathwork, releasing emotions, eating nutrient dense local seasonal foods, spending time with loved ones, laughing, doing things that bring you energy and impassion you. Instead of listening to all the people tell you what is good and not good for you, tune out the noise and tune into your own body. YOU know yourself best.

I go deeper into the basics of health here:

Instead of defining myself by my health problems, which I did for a while, I took a step back and started truly living and loving life. When I was down on myself for being sick, I was constantly stressed on healing and how to heal, instead of just living.

Living is healing. Simplicity is the answer. The more you listen to your body, the more you trust your intuition and the better you feel. & THAT is healing.
