Dolce Far Niente
Enjoying the sweetness of nothing, and an end of summer strawberries peaches & cream cobbler.
Hello beautifuls! I am currently sipping on an Aperol spritz, enjoying stunning Italy. I tried a Campari spritz as well for the first time and I honestly really enjoyed it too, but I don’t know if that is a popular opinion as I am weirdly partial towards bitter tasting things (favorite lettuces are arugula and radicchio).
One of my favorite sayings in the world is “Dolce Far Niente”, which means the sweetness of doing nothing. I find this so special. In my everyday world, I am always trying to find ways to keep myself busy. I am never done with work, there is always something more to do. Being bored is not an option. Even if boredom does come, the first choice is to consume (social media scrolling, TV). Not saying that is a bad thing, I do have a reality TV guilty pleasure, but there is value in boredom.
Doing nothing is amazing. Being still is a gift. We do not always have to be doing something productive. Slowing down is so important. This trip has forced me to slow down, be present, be okay with doing absolutely nothing. Italians have a way about them where they live in this moment now, they don’t feel like they need to be somewhere else or doing something else, they are enjoying what’s in front of them.
My favorite part is it seems there is a universal napping time between 1-4PM where the entire city quiets down. Businesses close, the streets aren’t as full, it’s amazing.
My favorite Ted Talk has always been How Boredom Leads to your Brightest Ideas, it is a must watch. It is so true. We try to busy ourselves constantly for the goal of being productive, moving forward in our goals, getting ahead, but prioritizing the sweetness of absolutely nothing is undoubtedly just as important.
I’ve always realized I am most inspired after a day of nothing. After a day of relaxing, being present, and being still. OR right as I am trying to fall asleep, all these ideas begin to flow out of me. Forced creativity is not peak creativity. Nothingness is needed in order to achieve incredible somethingness. Just a thought….
Seasonal Recipe: End of Summer Strawberry Peaches & Cream Cobbler (Gluten Free!)
Ok I realize I need to stop calling recipes the end of summer recipes because it is going to be the end of winter and I will still be saying it but I swear this is the last one hahaha… and it is WORTH IT. You can honestly use any fruit with this and it would be delicious. It’s zesty, light and fresh, but still satisfying to your sweet tooth. Use up the last of your summer seasonal fruits and make this delicious cobbler.
+ you need to make some fresh homemade whipped cream or vanilla ice cream along with it because what is a fruity sweet without a creamy topping??
